Victorian Times Tea & Coffee Shop

Hello! We are the Payton/ Evans family, myself

(Gary), my wife Debbie, Our Daughter Hannah and

her Husband Tom and in October 2014, we left

Cumbira to realise a couple of our dreams - to own

our own Tea Room and Coffee Shop and to live a

new life by the sea. Deb and myself always wanted

to retire by the sea at some point in the future and

when the oppertunity of my taking voluntary

Redundancy from my previous job came up, we

decided it was the right time to put all our eggs in

one basket and give it a go. We had a lot of help

and support from Hannah and Tom and threw

ourselves into it, finally taking over our fantastic

Tea Room on 10th January 2015. Since then we have

loved every minute of it. Our customers are our

friends and we like to think we create a really

friendly and welcoming environment for everyone

who comes in to visit us.

Our Tea Room is unique in Paignton and indeed Torbay as we take our customers back in time to a

time of loose leaf teas, china tea cups and fine home baking and pride ourselves on our customer

service with a personal touch. Chloe joined our team in 2015, she is now about to graduate from

University as a Child Nurse.

Deb makes almost everything with her own hands on the premises and her baking is truly exqusite.

Amongst our customers’ favourites are our renowned Victoria Sponge, our yummy scones, chocolate

cakes, cream puffs and jam cushions though it is hard to choose from so many! The Tea Room is our

pride and joy and we are so proud to have recived our Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor so

soon along with our “Five star” Food Hygiene Certificate. Deb and Han have made so many

improvments to the Tea Room since we took over including introducing our little garden at the rear

and creating our “Victorian Parlour” area at the top of the stairs where customers can take their tea

and cake in a victorian style parlour room just like they used to.

Our Tea Room has a long and varied history and began it’s post Victorian era as Wallis’ Electricals (Which incedentally is now next door), before becoming Polly Buddles Dress Shop and The Pine Shop thereafter. Following on from this, the shop became a “Natural Break” Cafe before taking a different direction becoming a Take Away Burger Shop! The shop then change direction again and for the first time became a traditional Tea Room named “The Singer Tea Rooms” celebrating it’s links with the Singer sewing machine family. Indeed, the table legs we have in our Tea Room then took on an International flavour when it became “Anastasias Russian Tea Rooms” for a short spell before adoptng it’s current name - “Victorian Times Tea and Coffee Shop” in 2013. Our family took it over in January 2015 and we haven’t looked back, happily serving our customers in our quintessenitally English Tea Room.
